Marijuana enforcement teams served nine warrants and arrested fourteen people over two days in an illegal marijuana growing operation out of San Bernardino County.

Police say they found more than 5,500 marijuana plants, around 170 pounds of processed marijuana, generic Vicodin pills and four firearms in the raid. They said the large scale of the operation was more consistent with for-profit activity than a medical marijuana operation. Medical marijuana advocates blame growing operations like these for depleting natural resources, diverting public streams, and dumping illegal fertilizers, while the California Department of Fish and Wildlife contends that the problem has gotten worse since medical marijuana became legal.

The suspects provided medical marijuana recommendations that police determined to be fake. Even with a medical marijuana recommendation, however, patients in California are limited to 8 ounces of processed marijuana, 6 adult plants, or 12 immature plants under California’s Proposition 215. Dispensaries and coops are still advised to keep less than 99 plants on site to avoid federal prosecution, even when their business is operating within the confines of the law.

In San Bernardino County, all outdoor growing activities are illegal. The county made the move to outlaw outdoor growing in 2011, along with banning all dispensary storefront operations. Most dispensaries there shut their doors and either relocated somewhere more friendly, or converted to delivery-only services.
