Irvine California criminal defense attorneyAn Anaheim woman has been charged with deceptive record keeping in a $1.4 million embezzlement plot that included two law firms.

Investigators say Shawna Berretto paid her personal credit cards with money from the firms’ accounts while employed as a bookkeeper and manager for the law firms. She allegedly opened new credit cards in the firms’ names without authorization, and paid for private school tuition and golf club memberships with the firms’ money. Berretto hid her activities using computer accounting software. Her husband has also been charged with grand theft for accepting checks from his wife totaling more than $10,000. He could face three years in jail if convicted.

Berretto has been charged with felony counts for computer access fraud, falsifying records, grand theft, and identity theft, as well as sentencing enhancements for money laundering, property damage, property loss, and white-collar crime. If convicted, she could spend as much as 32 years in prison.

In California white-collar crime cases, sentencing enhancements are used to punish theft, property damage or loss over a certain dollar amount. Under the “freeze and seize” law, a person is eligible for sentencing enhancements if: They are convicted for two more related felonies in a single proceeding, those felonies include fraud or embezzlement and show a pattern of such behavior, and the dollar amount taken exceeds $100,000.
