Businesses in the OC Banking on Legalization

Currently, marijuana is legal for recreational use only in Washington and Colorado. Many think California could become the next state to fully legalize in 2016—but some Orange County business owners are banking on it.

Terra Tech manufactures and sells hydroponic growing supplies, filtrations systems and giant, mobile growing containers that right now are only legal for growing lettuce. They also own a laboratory where they have gotten the green light from Oakland to produce marijuana products. Although their Edible Garden line brought in $7 million last year, the goal is to be ready for when legalization hits.

Weedmaps combines menu, pricing and location information for dispensaries so that users can find the right combination of distance and price. Last year it brought in $25 million from listing fees and advertising. They haven’t ventured into the selling business just yet, but say that once it’s legal for recreational use, the Weedmaps found says they aim to be the Amazon.com of medical marijuana.

Many others, from attorneys to former Wall Street bankers, are investing, starting hedge funds and getting involved now, while the community is small and intimate. They hope their wager will pay off with legalization in 2016. Even with marijuana sales restricted to medical use, the San Francisco Bay area market is the same size as the entire state of Colorado’s recreational-use market.
