santa ana criminal defense attorneyA 1980s TV star and psychic, former martial arts instructor, and convicted sex offender will remain in custody at Coalinga State Hospital until May 2015 at least.

Prosecutors say 55-year-old David Hydrick still poses a threat to the public and should remain hospitalized indefinitely. Hydrick was convicted of sexual offenses against six teenage boys in 1989. He was sentenced to 17 years in prison and has already served that term, but upon his release in 2006 was sent instead to Coalinga State Hospital for treatment under a new law governing how the state of California handles sexual predators.

Under the new 2006 law, the District Attorney can file a petition to hold a jury trial to decide whether an offender should be held indefinitely. In 2013, the District Attorney’s office attempted to have him recommitted, but a jury vote resulted in a 10-2 verdict. The jury’s decision must be unanimous. The DA then had the choice of releasing Hydrick or pursuing a second trial. The office pursued a second trial, this time having Hydrick’s victims testify as adults.

Hydrick appeared on shows such as That’s Incredible and Ripley’s Believe it or Not in the 80s demonstrating his self-proclaimed psychic powers. He also made the news later that decade by escaping from jails in three different states.
