murder defense los angelesThe trial of a Westminster man has begun, nearly a decade after the murder of his wife.

In February 2013, Magdi Girgis was charged with felony counts of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, false imprisonment by violence, and enhancements for murder for financial gain, and murder to prevent testimony.

Prosecutors say Girgis had his wife murdered in 2004 to keep from paying alimony in a divorce settlement, and to keep from losing a medical license. His wife was set to testify in court about a 2004 domestic violence incident that could have resulted in a felony conviction. The conviction would have prevented Girgis from practicing as a respiratory therapist.

Girgis has denied having any connection in the murder and has entered a plea of not guilty. Two of the suspects in the actual murder are still at large. Police are still looking for the killer and the man they say worked with Girgis to set up the killing.

The couple’s two teenage sons were home at the time of the killing. One assailant, who was later caught, tied up then 17-year old Ryan Girgis and threw him in a closet. His mother, Ariet Girgis, was stabbed several times and died at the scene. After the murder, Ryan moved to a gated community with family. Magdi moved back into the home and continued to live there.
