santa ana marijuana defense attorneyFittingly held over Independence Day weekend, California’s first medical marijuana farmer’s market will happen this July 4 weekend. The event is the first public market held to allow patients to buy directly from growers. Organizers hope the market will help medical marijuana patients find trustworthy growers.

The market also features educational speakers, which set the tone for the weekend of helping patients learn about purchasing and using medical marijuana safely.

In California, it is legal for patients to grow or purchase marijuana for medical use. Under SB 420 and Prop 215, patients are allowed 8 ounces of dried marijuana, 6 adult plants, or 12 immature plants. All that’s required is a doctor’s recommendation that medical marijuana would benefit their condition. Medical marijuana is listed as an accepted treatment for hundreds of ailments in SB 420, including everything from migraine headaches to cancer.

The only ways for patients to legally obtain medical marijuana is by finding a grower collective or coop, where patients join together with growers to supply their need. These cooperatives, provided for in the law, are allowed to grow up to the legal amounts of pot per patient. However, in many municipalities in California, the storefronts these collectives operate out of are being banned, fined or raided due to biases in the public and local law enforcement.

The market will be held July 4-6 between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. in East Los Angeles at the new West Coast Collective dispensary at 1500 Esperanza Street
