Medical marijuana research company American Green has announced the opening of a new test facility near Hemet, California.

The facility will be growing in light-deprived conditions to help produce more efficient ways of dealing with limited farming space and resources, and testing medicinal strains for medical applications.

The main focus of the research is centered around Charlotte’s Web, a low-THC, high-CBD strain known for its applications in pediatric patients. CBD is a naturally occurring cannabinoid that scientists are studying for applications with chronic pain, diabetes, cancer, and a host of other physical and neurological disorders. Some children with severe forms of epilepsy that don’t respond to any other medications have made progress and even stopped seizures using cannabis oil from the Charlotte’s Web strain.

However, because of the fact that Charlotte’s Web has little THC and does not produce the signature high associated with marijuana, few dispensaries grow or sell it, leading to a shortage. Under California’s medical marijuana laws, dispensaries have to limit the number of plants they grow and the number of patients they serve. One nonprofit that helps families whose children suffer from epilepsy, Realm of Caring, says that their patient list is limited to just 27 families, and that they have more than 1,000 others on the waiting list.
