Medical Marijuana delivery services in California are booming thanks to a myriad of municipal ordinances banning dispensary storefronts in many local communities. About 200 dispensaries have been closed in the last year in the L.A. area alone thanks to new laws like Proposition D.

Proposition D, a measure approved by Los Angeles voters last year, capped the number of dispensaries that can operate in the L.A. area at 135. The measure also raised taxes to $60 per $1,000 gross receipts. Prop D was up against two other regulatory efforts, one of which capped the number of dispensaries but didn’t raise taxes, and another which would have raised taxes but did not provide a cap. Delivery services aren’t specifically mentioned in state law, but they were prohibited in L.A. under Proposition D.

Delivery services require patients to join, just like a cooperative or collective. Many require patients to register online and provide proof of a doctor’s recommendation. Delivery services offer a wide range of products, from dried marijuana to marijuana-infused edibles. The availability of medical marijuana delivery services like Weed on Wheels and Speed Weed have tripled nationwide in the past year.

A few cities have banned medical marijuana delivery services, but most allow them to operate freely. The L.A. city attorney’s office says they have not yet prosecuted any delivery service operations.
