A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that 92 percent of medical marijuana patients report that alleviated symptoms of a serious medical condition, such as chronic pain, cancer, migraine and arthritis.

The health survey out of California polled nearly 8,000 medical marijuana patients, five percent of which were using medical marijuana for a serious health condition. Researchers found no significant statistical groupings in the study, saying it was used across most racial groups, ages, and education levels.

Researchers said their study contradicts the common argument that medical marijuana is mostly used recreationally by healthy young people. The most common reasons for use were to treat conditions that mainstream medicine didn’t treat effectively, or for conditions that did not have a known treatment.

One of the main arguments against medical marijuana in any state has been that doctor’s recommendations are too easy to get and that anyone can get access to medical marijuana. Doctors are prevented from prescribing medical marijuana due to marijuana’s current status as a schedule 1 substance under federal law. Because of this classification, the FDA, AMA, and other agencies have also had trouble getting access to both marijuana and federal funding for medical studies on the efficacy of medical marijuana to treat serious medical conditions such as epilepsy, cancer, HIV, and other illnesses.
