criminal lawyer orange countyPaula Donnell of Fullerton was convicted of embezzling more than $300,000 from her employer after a bench trial in mid-March.

Authorities say Donnell served as the controller at Ultimate New Homes Sales & Marketing in Anaheim from 2002 to 2010. During that time, she was entitled to bonuses from each home that closed escrow with the company.

However, in 2004, authorities say that Donnell began making fake entries in the company’s check ledger to hide checks and online transfers made to her own account. During that time, the company closed on 27 homes, but Donnell collected on 100, totaling $370,000 in bonuses.

Donnell was found guilty of felony grand theft, filing a false tax return, and filing a false statement. She will receive sentencing enhancements for property loss and aggravated white-collar crime, for a maximum of 13 years in prison.

Sentencing enhancements are circumstances in a case that allow the judge to give a harsher sentence for a crime. In this case, aggravated white-collar crime enhancement is being imposed because the total loss to the company  is over $100,000.
