Just after noon on Wednesday, two men walked into the Nature’s Cure dispensary and began firing at the security guard, who fired back. One of the suspects was shot in the stomach. The other suspect fled the scene in a dark BMW. The security guard was unhurt. One bystander was injured when she fell and hit her head when the gunfire broke out. Medical marijuana dispensaries are at high risk for robbery because they carry lots of cash and have a highly desirable product that can be sold quickly.

Federal regulations prevent banks and credit companies from doing business with dispensaries because marijuana is still classified by the FDA as a Schedule 1 narcotic. Anti money-laundering laws prohibit financial institutions from taking any money obtained through the sale of narcotics. However, the DEA recently requested a study to determine if marijuana really belongs on that list alongside drugs like morphine and heroin. Reclassification could result in banks being allowed to do business with dispensaries, and even more widespread legalization of medical marijuana.

Dispensary owners are faced with even more challenges, as late last year, armored truck companies quit serving dispensary clients under pressure from the DEA. That means employees are left to secure and transport large amounts of cash themselves.

Currently, 22 states have legalized medical marijuana, including California, and 4 more states have legalization laws in the works.
