San Jose Cannabis Clubs Exchanging Weed for Signatures

Cannabis clubs in San Jose are giving away free medical marijuana—and an evaluation—just for signing a petition against new zoning restrictions in San Jose that would put just about all the city’s dispensaries out of business.

Last month, the San Jose city council passed tough new zoning laws that require all medical marijuana cooperatives to grow their own marijuana, make their own concentrates, and stay 150 feet away from any residence and 1,000 feet or more away from schools and rehab centers. The new rules mean around 90 percent of San Jose’s current cooperatives would have to close their doors.

Experts estimate the city would lose around $5.4 million in tax revenue as a result of the new zoning laws. Parents who attended the zoning meetings said the rules were needed because pot confiscated from local high schools was coming from the dispensaries. They also said dispensary locations were a blight on the city and caused urban decay.

So the Silicon Valley Cannabis Coalition is trying to attract the attention of voters with free medical marijuana. The coalition has pledged to give away 100 pounds of medical marijuana as long as 45,000 individuals come out to sign the petition that would force the new zoning laws to a referendum.

The coalition is also planning four days of protests from July 14 to 17, including staffing tables day and night where residents can come sign and get their voucher for medical marijuana.
