santa ana criminal defense attorneyMission Impossible-style burglars hit an Orange County jewelry store, taking their time to clear out nearly $500,000 in inventory before fleeing the store.

Police say the suspects cut a hole in the bathroom ceiling of Nuggets and Carats, disconnected the security alarm, and then went to work. They bored a fist-sized hole in a jewelry safe and began cutting on another one but appeared to have run out of time. They emptied every single jewelry case, which the owner says was filled with custom pieces made by his staff.

So far, investigators have no leads except the evidence from a similar burglary at Tustin Village Jewelers in April. The burglars tunneled into the store from a business next door in that crime, also disarming the alarm and cutting into the safe to make off with $600,000 to $700,000 in jewelry. A similar heist happened to South Bay Jewelry in Laguna Hills in February.

The owner of Nuggets and Carats says this is the second time his store has been burglarized in the past year.

Under California law, there is a distinct difference between theft, robbery and burglary. The difference lies in how it’s done and where the victim is during the crime. Theft happens when you take something from someone else with intent to keep it. If you have to enter a property illegally to take the item, it becomes burglary. Robbery is when you do the same, but you steal it directly from the person or in their presence, using force.
